CISM sport disciplines include individual and group competitions that are suited for the development of the armed forces of the member nations. The 26 CISM sport disciplines are as follows
Military Sports (5 disciplines)
- * Military Pentathlon (Shooting, Obstacle running, Obstacle swimming, Throwing, Cross country)
- * Aeronautical Pentathlon
- - Flying Contest: A navigator from the participating nation boards a double-seat plane flown by a pilot from the host nation. The plane flies at 600 feet for approximately 40 minutes along the triangular course and the contestants are graded for their coordinates, direction and time accuracy.
- - Sport Contest: 5 disciplines of Fencing, Swimming, Ball and Escape; Escape encompasses Obstacle run and Orienteering events
- * Naval Pentathlon (Obstacle race, Life-saving swimming race, Utility swimming race, Seamanship race, Amphibious cross-country race)
- * Orienteering
- * Parachuting (Individual Accuracy, Style and Formation Skydive)
Combat Sports (5 disciplines)
- * Taekwondo
- * Boxing
- * Judo
- * Wrestling
- * Fencing
Individual Sports (11 disciplines)
- * Track & Field
- * Swimming
- * Cycling
- * Triathlon
- * Modern Pentathlon
- * Equestrian
- * Sailing
- * Cross Country

Ball Sports (5 disciplines)
- * Football
- * Volleyball

The rules applied to the games are decided by CISM and only the athletes on active duty are allowed to participate.
The annual General Assembly decides the locations of military world championships to be held in the following year.
The expenses for organizing a military world championships are borne by the hosting nations.
The lodging, transportation and recreational expenses are also assumed by the host countries(within the size of mission stipulated for each CISM discipline; participating nations bear the costs for the extra participants).
The participating nations assume the expenses for transportation to the event venue and other expenses.
