CISM Introduction

CISM stands for Conseil International du Sport Militaire in French and it was founded in 1948 in Nice, France with the goal of developing military athleticism and contributing to world peace by cultivating friendship among the member nations.

CISM, one of the largest multidisciplinary sport organizations in the world, is contributing to the development of military athleticism and solidarity between the servicemen and women of different nations by organizing the CISM Military World championships for various disciplines and the comprehensive quadrennial CISM Military World Games in accordance with CISM ideology embodied in its motto of "Friendship through Sport".

Since its inauguration on February 18, 1948, the CISM membership has increased to 133 nations as of 2010. Korea became an official member with the recommendation of Greece in September of 1957; North Korea participated in the Beijing events in 1992 as an observer and attained formal membership in April of 1993.

In September of 1995, the 1st Military World Games, an international multi-sports event fashioned after the Olympic Games, was held in Rome, Italy with 4,017 athletes from 93 nations competing in 17 disciplines. It was followed in 1999 by the 2nd Military World Games in Zagreb, Croatia where 6,734 participants from 82 countries took part in 20 categories, in 2003 by the 3rd Military World Games in Catania, Italy where 4,500 participants from 90 countries took part in 18 categories, and in 2008 by the 4th Military World Games in Hyderabad, India where 4,738 participants from 101 states came together. The 5th Military World Games is scheduled to take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2011 and the 6th Military World Games is scheduled to take place in Mungyeong, Korea, in 2015.
